Análisis multitemporal de la morfología del flanco occidental de la desembocadura del Río Magdalena en Bocas de Ceniza

Bettin Polo, Miguel Alejandro · Soto Solano, Isabella SharickAsesor: Paniagua Arroyave, Juan Felipe

The Magdalena River mouth at Bocas de Ceniza constitutes a highly dynamic system, where the interaction between fluvial input and the wave regime has favored the formation of a coastal spit on the western side of the jetty. This study aims to characterize the morphological evolution of this spit over the period 2000 – 2025, as well as to evaluate the influence of variability in mean discharge and sediment loads on its development. To achieve this, a multitemporal analysis was conducted using satellite imagery, including the delineation of the spit and the calculation of morphometric parameters such as area, perimeter, width and progradation rates. Additionally, hydrological time series from IDEAM were analyzed and a relationship between discharge and sediment loads was established using a power regression model, which was used to estimate values for periods lacking data. The results show a progressive growth of the spit toward the southwest, reaching a maximum around 2010, followed by a reduction in recent years. However, no direct relationship was found between morphological evolution and the analyzed variables, leading to the rejection of the proposed hypothesis. Limitations include the lack of recent sediment data, along with limited bathymetric and oceanographic information, which constrain the scope of the study. This work contributes to the understanding of morphological evolution in mixed – dominance deltas, where fluvial and marine processes interact across both spatial and temporal scales.
