Identificación y cuantificación de riesgos en proyectos ambientales en una consultora ambiental ubicada en Medellín

Valencia Cifuentes, María Fernanda · Ossa Román, KatherineAsesor: Gómez Salazar, Elkin Arcesio

This case study identifies and quantifies the risks associated with the environmental projects of a consulting firm located in Medellín, Colombia. The firm was found to lack formal risk management methodologies. Using a mixed-methods approach, the literature on risk identification and quantification methodologies was reviewed. Three project types were characterized: environmental permitting, forestry operations, and implementation of biotic component compensation plans. A semi-quantitative rating instrument (scale 1–25) was administered to ten project coordinators within the organization. Forestry operations exhibited the highest density of critical risks and were selected as the case study for quantitative analysis. Using the Pareto principle, 26 risks were prioritized and modeled through Monte Carlo simulation with 10,000 iterations, employing triangular, binomial, and Poisson distributions. The results reveal that underestimation of volumes, lack of technical personnel, machinery accidents, and inadequate area delimitation represent the greatest financial threats to this type of project. Finally, risk-differentiated mitigation strategies are proposed, and contingency reserves are established based on 95 % and 99 % VaR percentiles, providing a replicable methodological guide for the organization.
