On the occasion of XM’s twentieth anniversary, this book offers a rigorous and accessible account of the evolution of Colombia’s electricity sector and the role XM has played in that process. The first chapter reconstructs XM’s business history within the broader context of the transformation of Colombia’s electricity sector, from the late nineteenth century to the present. It examines the institutional reforms that gave rise to the current model and explains how XM’s consolidation, together with strong institutions, has contributed to the reliability of the electricity system. The second chapter analyzes the relationship between the evolution of the electricity sector and the country’s economic and social development. It highlights progress in coverage and well-being while examining territorial disparities and the challenges posed by energy poverty. The third chapter examines recent transformations in the global electricity sector and their impact on Colombia. It explores the strategic role of system operators in the energy transition and places XM in an international perspective by comparing it with world-class counterparts. Finally, the fourth chapter examines the challenges posed by the energy transition and reflects on the institutional, regulatory, and technological conditions required to integrate new energy sources, strengthen system resilience, and ensure a reliable electricity supply. Based on collective research that brings together documentary, statistical, and testimonial sources, this book provides an essential reference for understanding the past and present of Colombia’s electricity sector, as well as its prospects for the future.
