Body image and risk of drunkorexia in Mexican adults with and without borderline personality disorder
Introduction: The deterioration in the quality of life among individuals with psychiatric disorders highlights the importance of studying these conditions, with Borderline Personality Disorder being one of the most frequently diagnosed. The aim of this study was to compare body image, dissatisfaction and alteration and the risk of drunkorexia in individuals with or without BPD. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative, comparative design was used, with a total sample of N = 426 Mexican participants, including n1 = 72 individuals diagnosed with BPD and n2 = 354 university students as controls, aged 18 to 30. The McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder, the body silhouette scales, and the CEBRACS scale, were used to measure the study variables; The application was individual through Google Forms. Results: The main findings of the research indicate statistically significant differences in dissatisfaction and alteration of body image by group F = 5.3, p = .022; F = 12.005, p = .001, and by sex, F = 4.6, p = .033; F = 7.5, p = .006. Regarding drunkorexia, only group differences were significant, F = 36.2, p < .001. Conclusions: Participants with BPD exhibited higher levels of body image disturbance and risk of drunkorexia compared to controls.
