Resumen

Small-scale composting on closed devices was one of the key research topics of the Bogota Botanical Garden (JBB) for the development of the Urban Agriculture Project 319 activities. Given the consolidation scenario of an urban agriculture program in the city, the JBB designed and built a prototype for producing compost in urban conditions. The goal of this research was the redesign and optimization of this prototype taking into account the determinants of a small scale aerobic process.According to an analysis of the dimensions of the actual prototype, the design features and the handling of organic materials taken into account by JBB for the production of good quality compost, this research carried out a phase to determine the diagnostic efficiency of the prototype, in terms of product quality and to identity possible improvements. A second phase consisted on the construction of a redesigned device and a final experimentation and verification phase of its efficiency. During the execution of the different phases the factors that control a compost aerobic process (oxygen, pH, humidity and temperature) were always taken into account, to improve some features of the prototype JBB, such as its size, ventilation mode, thermal insulation and ease of turning among others, to increase the efficiency of the composting process to small scale.
