Resumen
Autoimmune diseases are those in which there is hypersensitivity against the body itself, manifesting as organ-specific or systemic, depending on the organ involved. Furthermore, treatment for these conditions is complex. In most cases, the use of high doses of systemic steroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics for long periods of time is beneficial. This can lead to undesirable pharmacological events in the eyeball, such as increased intraocular pressure, the development of cataracts (posterior subcapsular cataracts, the most common in these cases), drug allergy with eyelid edema, papillary conjunctivitis, iritis, episcleritis, scleritis, increased susceptibility to infections, especially viral, fungal, or bacterial diseases of the cornea, delayed corneal healing, tear film instability, dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, and multiple ocular surface factors.
