Resumen
This study analyzed the expansion process of rural urbanization in the municipality of Pasto, Colombia, between 1989 and 2024, using a multitemporal approach based on remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS). Landsat 5 TM (1989) and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS (2024) images were used to calculate the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), which allowed for the identification and quantification of changes in urban coverage on rural land. The results showed a significant territorial transformation, shifting from an initially linear and concentrated growth pattern in 1989 to a dispersed, fragmented, and polycentric expansion by 2024. The districts of El Encano, Catambuco, El Socorro, and Jamondino recorded the highest rates of urbanization, each exceeding 200 transformed hectares. This process reshaped the urban–rural relationship, creating pressures on natural resources, landscape fragmentation, and challenges for territorial planning. Therefore, the research provided empirical evidence for sustainable land management and the revision of territorial planning instruments in intermediate cities such as Pasto.
