Resumen
This paper is a literature review on the use of smart shape memory materials, specifically alloys (SMA) and polymers (SMP), as they are the most widely used in civil engineering. The methodological process focused on compiling scientific databases and recent and older studies (maximum 20 years old), which demonstrate the mechanical, thermal, and functional properties of these SMMs, highlighting their recovery capacity, superelasticity, and adaptability to external changes. The results showed that shape memory alloys have the capacity to achieve tensile strengths of up to 810 MPa, exceeding that of conventional steel (550 MPa), reduce deflection, control cracking, and modify failure
