Resumen
Xylene is the most commonly used solvent for root canal retreatment. However, it has been classified by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) as a carcinogen for humans. Due to this risk, safer alternatives are being sought. Therefore, several studies have proposed lemon extract as a natural solvent, which offers antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. A previous study by the research group reported that residues of xylene and lemon extract penetrate up to the root cementum, but the amount and concentration in different areas of dentin are not clear. Objectives: To determine the concentration of benzene in retreatment with xylene and terpene in retreatment with lemon extract oil in dentin and root cementum. Methodology: An in vitro descriptive study will be conducted, comprising 30 singlerooted premolars. The samples will be divided into two groups according to the type of solvent used in retreatment: Group A (xylene) and Group B (lemon extract oil). The tooth root will be divided into three equal parts to obtain the cervical, middle, and apical thirds. The samples will be analyzed using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to determine components and molecules. Data will be averaged and compared with a control group (unexposed teeth) using a t-test (p<0.05). Results: It is expected to determine the concentration of benzene and terpene in dentin, root cementum, and periodontal ligament after retreatment with xylene and lemon extract oil. This will allow concluding which is more beneficial or harmful to human health.
