Resumen
The high technical and healthcare demands of dental training, linked to theoretical rigor and clinical practice, compromise the psychological balance evidenced by academic burnout symptoms and sleep disturbances. This research aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and academic burnout symptoms in 47 dental students from a university institution in Armenia, Quindío. The theoretical framework integrated the multidimensional model of Buysse et al., (1989) and the three-dimensional structure of Maslach and Jackson (1981). Under a quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional design, the PSQI and MBI-SS instruments were applied in their Colombian-validated versions. Data management was performed through descriptive and inferential statistics (Spearman's Rho) using SPSS. The results revealed that 63,8% of the sample presents moderate sleep disturbances, with an average duration of 6,03 hours. Regarding academic burnout symptoms, emotional exhaustion is the most affected dimension (29,8% moderate risk; 10,6% very high risk), while cynicism remains low (48,9% no risk) and reduced self-efficacy evidences vulnerability (23,4% moderate risk). Astrong positive correlation was found between subjective sleep quality and emotional exhaustion (rs= 0,615; p < 0.01), identifying a paradox, high sleep efficiency (93,75%) despite severe daytime dysfunction (70,2%). It is concluded that the evaluated students present a normalized sleep debt where exhaustion represents a risk to psychological safety, although low cynicism preserves vocational commitment.
