Resumen

This research explores the potential impact of the expansion and increased competition from hard discount stores on neighborhood shopkeepers in districts 11 and 13 of the city of Ibagué. A systematic and rigorous sample was selected to address the research objectives. The research highlights the impact these chains are having; it also identifies the shopkeepers' limited training, lack of coordination among them, and their vulnerability due to the difficulty of transitioning to other economic sectors. Furthermore, for most families, this is their only source of income. Therefore, a project will be proposed to political authorities to enhance the neighborhood shopkeepers' skills in management and marketing techniques to help them compete with hard discount stores and minimize the negative social impact these stores are beginning to cause, as evidenced by the layoffs occurring among neighborhood shopkeepers in the analyzed districts.
