Evaluación de las condiciones de salud de las palomas de plaza (Columba livia) atendidas en la Unidad Distrital de Atención de Palomas (UDAP) en los años 2019 y 2021 como parte del componente de función biológica

Resumen

The impact of animal welfare has grown steadily over the years; it has been defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO, 2015) as the term that designates the physical and mental state of an animal in relation to the conditions in which it lives and dies. The main cause of the problems that affect it is due to the erroneous perception by humans that animals are not sentient beings and therefore lack the capacity to suffer. This leads to the development of negative attitudes toward them, which ultimately result in cruel behavior and/or treatment that is inappropriate for non-human species. Among the greatest challenges in welfare is the assessment of bird welfare, where almost always only the biological functioning and health status of the animals are considered (Kalnins et al., 2022; Rodenburg et al., 2003).
