The growing energy demand has driven the search for alternative generation sources, such as solar photovoltaic and wind energy. However, since these sources generate energy as direct current (DC), devices such as inverters are required to convert it into alternating current (AC) and achieve its integration with the grid. The performance of these inverters largely depends on the control strategy employed, with the proportional-integral (PI) controller being widely used for these devices, although with recognized limitations in signal tracking and in reducing total harmonic distortion, both key aspects for ensuring the quality of the energy delivered to the grid. Given this problem, the design and implementation of a proportional-resonant (PR) controller is proposed, obtained through the frequency shifting of a PI control using the Laplace transform, as an alternative that improves reference signal tracking and strengthens the quality of the energy delivered by the inverter. The project involved plant modeling, PI controller design, PR controller design, simulation-based validation, controller tuning, and implementation on the OPAL-RT experimental platform for AC microgrids at Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas.
