The violence of the armed conflict in Colombia: : influence and relationship with mental health problems within indigenous communities

Resumen

In Colombia, the armed conflict has a history of approximately 65 years, during which the indigenous peoples have had to resist multiple violations of their rights. To this day, they have faced forced displacement and attacks on their populations. Time and again, they have seen their lives and their harmony interrupted by the armed conflict and its ideas of territorial conquest. In order to understand the colonial perspective of this type of conflict, it is important to focus on the understanding of politics, from the perspective of power, as a process that occurs on a micro scale within indigenous communities and that is related to the issues of displacement, territory, gender and mental health. The armed conflict, in addition to causing physical wounds, has repercussions on mental health; hence, in indigenous communities it has triggered a high rate of suicides and the development of multiple mental disorders. This article proposes a model of comprehensive mental health care for indigenous peoples.
