Promoting public speaking competence in EFL learners through communicative language teaching: focus on LBI students at the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira

This paper reports a research project framed within the principles of the qualitative research method. This study aimed to characterize the performance of students’ public speaking skills in EFL learners in tertiary education at a Colombian university through an extracurricular bilingual environment for pre-service English teachers between the fourth and eighth semesters at Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira by integrating the theory and the methodology of the Communicative Language Teaching approach. Researchers collected data through field diaries, observations, group focus interviews, and artifacts such as rubrics, video recordings, and transcriptions. In conclusion, this research project aimed to provide students with an enriching bilingual experience by laying the foundations of Public Speaking Skills in a local context, helping researchers to comprehend participants capacities in the area of study by analyzing their progress through the extracurricular bilingual space regarding essential life skills and professional competencies required in the 21st century.
