Storytelling for enhancing phonological awareness in third grade children
This Extension project explored the use of Storytelling as a pedagogical strategy to strengthen Phonological Awareness in third-grade students at a public school in Pereira, Colombia. The main purpose of the study was to analyze how Storytelling can support children's ability to recognize and produce English phonemes that are difficult for Spanish speakers, such as [b/v] [s/z] [/ʧ/t]. This implementation was developed in nine sessions divided into three reflective cycles through which students participated in stories created with artificial intelligence tools, accompanied by kinesic and visual activities. Data was collected through classroom observations, reflective journals, and students' oral and auditory performance. These results showed significant progress, not only in the pronunciation, discrimination, and recognition of the phonemes worked on in class, but also in greater motivation and participation during the implementation sessions. In addition, the Storytelling strategy fostered a meaningful connection between language learning and creativity, promoting a stress-free environment. For the novice teachers, this implementation strengthened their skills in using artificial intelligence (AI) to plan, create, and implement each session. Overall, this project demonstrated that Storytelling is a very effective tool and strategy for developing Phonological Awareness while enriching English language learning experiences in bilingual education contexts.
