The impact of bilingualism on brain health: preventing cognitive aging. A systematic literature review of global research (2015-2025)
This systematic literature review examines the relationship between bilingualism and cognitive aging by analyzing twenty studies published between 2015 and 2025, with one additional study incorporated due to its importance for the topic. The study aims to explore how bilingualism contributes to cognitive reserve and its potential role in delaying the onset of cognitive decline and supporting mental resilience in older adults. The analysis resulted in the following key findings: bilingualism is associated with cognitive reserve rather than a direct slowing of cognitive decline; divergent results between cross-sectional and longitudinal studies are explained by methodological dichotomies; structural and functional brain advantages are observed mainly in older bilingual adults; the effects of bilingualism depend on factors such as frequency of use and level of proficiency.
