Identifying the cognitive benefits of bilingualim in adult users, a systematic literature review

Pérez-Ordoñez, Daniel FelipeAsesor: Alfonso-Bermudez, Laura Norela

This project conducts a systematic literature review about the cognitive benefits of bilingualism in adult L2 users. The aim was to analyze existing literature from 2015 to 2025 to identify potential cognitive benefits of bilingualism in adult users. The methodology consisted of performing a critical analysis with a qualitative approach on 20 pertinent documents regarding the topic. The data were selected by searching in specialized databases such as SpringerLink, ScienceDirect and Taylor&Francis. The findings identified four major cognitive domains influenced by bilingualism: Executive functions (inhibitory control, working memory), cognitive reserve (neuroprotection against aging decline), white matter integrity (structural preservation), and metalinguistic and metacognitive awareness (analytical skills, language learning). Several of the included articles dated from 2025 and the project achieved its expected outcomes of providing an updated and relevant sample of the state of the art about the topic. This project provides a clear and organized review that explicitly shows benefits and effects of bilingualism in the brain, thereby, refining theories in the field, promoting more nuanced and detailed research, and providing practical implications for educators and policymakers.
