The implementation of strategical speaking activities to reduce anxiety among LBI students at the UTP
This project addresses the widespread problem of speaking anxiety experienced by some LBI (Licenciatura en Bilingüismo con Énfasis En Inglés) students at the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira. Since speaking anxiety is a barrier to effective communication, the project recognizes the psychological and contextual factors that contribute to this problem and its impact on students' academic performance. By adopting an action research methodology, this project aims to implement practical activities, such as role-play, debates, and storytelling, to provide methodological speaking strategies to reduce speaking anxiety in LBI students. The results reveal that role-play activities may reduce speaking anxiety while promoting active engagement among learners. Similarly, conversational storytelling could be demonstrated as an effective strategy for reducing affective filters by encouraging spontaneous expression of personal experiences in group interactions. Finally, the application of these strategies contributed to practitioners' teacher professional development through the creation and design of a didactic sequence and materials. Overall, the project highlights the importance of communicative student-centered teaching to reduce speaking anxiety through methodological strategies.
