The use of mobile-assited language learning towards the improvement of pronunciation at 8th-grade students
This university extension project analyzed the benefits and challenges of integrating Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) to improve pronunciation among eighth-grade students at Liceo Bilingüe El Poblado in Pereira, Colombia. Methodologically, the study followed a qualitative approach inspired by the reflective cycles of action research across eight sessions. Data were gathered through field diaries, classroom observations, and student artifacts (voice recordings and presentations). The findings revealed a favorable impact of MALL, evidenced by a significant increase in student motivation and engagement through gamified tools such as Kahoot and Duolingo. The phonetic aspects acquired most easily were segmental phonological awareness, minimal pair recognition, and improvements in fluency and intonation via the shadowing technique. Nonetheless, persistent challenges were identified, such as native language (L1) interference in certain phonemes, technical infrastructure barriers, and socioeconomic limitations due to paywall restrictions in some applications. The project concludes that MALL redefines the teacher's role as a facilitator, transforming pronunciation practice from an intimidating task into an interactive, student-centered experience while promoting the professional adaptability of future educators.
