The use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to improve comprehension language skills and science subject matter at a public elementary school in fourth and fifth grades in Medellín Action Research

This action research project explores how CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) can support English learning in a Colombian public school, considering the influence of national guidelines such as the DBAs and the Estándares Básicos de Competencias. These policies have shaped the teaching of English across the country, and many schools have combined them with international approaches to strengthen communicative competence and increase students’ motivation. In this study, CLIL was implemented and adapted to the contextual realities of fourth and fifth grade learners in the Alfredo Cock Arango site of the I.E. San Vicente de Paul, with the purpose of integrating meaningful content with purposeful language use. Through a cycle of planning, action, observation, and reflection, the project examined how CLIL-based lessons influenced student engagement, participation, and communication in English. Data were gathered through class observations, reflective journals, and student work. Findings suggest that students responded positively to content-rich tasks that encouraged them to use English in authentic ways. The process also highlighted challenges related to time, materials, and the need for collaborative support. Overall, the study shows that CLIL can be a valuable approach for promoting motivation and communicative competence when adapted to local needs and supported by reflective teaching practices.
