Collective Voices in Action: Experiences and Lessons From Updating the English Area Plans in First and Fifth Grades at Alfonso López School Action Research

This action research study analyzes the process of implementing a new English Area Plan for first and fifth graders at a public school in Medellín. This research was developed in collaborative work with pre-service teachers, cooperating teachers, and students from the previously mentioned grades. The project aimed to evaluate the feasibility and coherence of the updated Area Plan all along with the lessons learned from the three groups of participants in this process. Data was collected through interviews, drawings, and journals. Findings revealed that meaningful, student centered activities, particularly ludic activities such as: games, singing, drawing and group work, enhanced students’ engagement, interest, and motivation towards the language. Results also show that collaboration between pre-service teachers and cooperating teachers strengthened teaching practices, supported area plan decisions, and contributed to a more contextualized teaching process. This study highlights the importance of following up the feasibility and coherence of area plan design, emotional factors in learning, and sustained collaboration in all levels among the participants involved in the English teaching and learning process.
