Gamification as a Strategy to Strengthen English Oral Abilities in Primary School Students Action Research

This action research project analyzed the effects of a gamified pedagogical strategy on the development of English oral abilities among 3rd and 4th-grade students at Institución Educativa Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Ayala, in Bello, Antioquia. The study emerged from classroom observations that showed limited opportunities for students' oral interaction, as lessons were mainly focused on grammar, vocabulary, and written activities. The intervention was developed in two cycles and included an initial oral test, five gamified sessions in each cycle, and a final oral test. Data were collected through oral tests, researchers’ journals, observation guides, self-assessment formats, and questionnaires answered by the cooperating teachers. The analysis followed a hybrid inductive-deductive thematic approach. Findings showed improvement in students’ basic oral performance (within their A1 level), especially when answering simple questions, recalling familiar vocabulary, and participating in short, guided exchanges. Gamified activities promoted oral participation and peer interaction.
