Multi-temporal analysis in observation frequency of Phimosus infuscatus (Threskiornithidae) in Colombia
Human expansion has altered landscapes, affecting species distribution, especially that of bird communities. These alterations often result in reduced species richness and abundance. However, certain bird species demonstrate a remarkable adaptability to urban environments, probably due to food availability and resources. For instance, the bare-faced ibis (Phimosus infuscatus) has adapted to urban areas. Nevertheless, there is a significant knowledge gap concerning its colonization process in Colombia. Our study aimed to assess changes in the observation frequency of P. infuscatus in rural and urban areas of Colombia between 1977 and 2023. The data comprises non-standardized sampling, birdwatchers’ observations, and citizen-science projects. The analysis revealed a consistent increase in observation frequency over time, peaking between 2010 and 2023. Initially prevalent in rural areas from 1977 to 2009, the observation frequency of P. infuscatus notably increased in urban areas of Colombia starting in 2010. We found compelling evidence indicating the successful adaptation of P. infuscatus in urban areas across Colombia. There has also been an observable expansion in its elevation over time, suggesting that elevation displacement might be influenced by habitat disturbances, although such an increase may have also been influenced by the growing popularity of eBird in Colombia in recent years.
