Resumen

This study explores the process of introduction, communication and adoption of the gender equality guidelines of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (2020) in Minminer S.A., a coal mining company in central Colombia. The study applies the theories of Gender and Development (GAD), Gender Perspective (GM) and Communication for Development to understand the implications, benefits and challenges of promoting gender equality in the Colombian mining industry. The research uses the personal experience of the company's Social Management and Communications Coordinator over two years, as well as 180 surveys and eight interviews. The results show that bringing the gender policy to the sector requires an effort from the bases, through direct dialogue with women miners, and changing the culture of the stakeholders; not including these factors generates a visible distance between the paper and reality. Therefore, the guidelines must be adapted to the specific context of each mining company and not act as another requirement to be met in order to be competitive in the sector. The study contributes to mining and gender studies in Latin America and Colombia that seek to promote best practices to change the masculinization of the mining sector. As well as gender and mining studies in Colombia that seek to generate a more equitable and safer sector for women.
