Transporte de hidrógeno en tuberías industriales: diferencias estructurales definidas en los códigos ASME B31.12 y ASME B31.3

Motta Ortiz, John Jr.Asesor: Juha, Mario Jesus

This thesis examines the structural implications associated with using industrial pipelines for the transportation of hydrogen, in comparison with natural gas, based on a systematic comparison between the ASME B31.12 and ASME B31.3 design codes. The work is framed within the context of the energy transition and the need to adapt existing infrastructure— particularly in Colombia—to meet decarbonization commitments, while simultaneously ensuring structural integrity, operational safety, and the technical feasibility of transporting H2 through pipelines. Methodologically, the research is structured into two main components. First, a detailed code-based review is conducted of the stresses considered by both standards and of key parameters such as the material performance factor, stress intensification factors, and flexibility factors.
